English composer Dr. Thomas Augustine Arne's talent made itself manifest despite many efforts to suppress it. Vigorously trained and reared for a career in law, Arne's love was for music. He would steal away from his studies in law to practice on a dilapidated piano that he had tried to repair and a beat-up violin that he had acquired, all the while sneaking away to the opera to set in the servant's gallery, a practice discouraged because of his privileged upbringing. As his proficiency in music grew, his parents realized his enormous talent and consented to let him pursue a career in the arts. He became a composer of many sucessful operas and and eventually his fame peaked as he received his doctorate in music at Oxford University. This collection of sonatas capitalizes on his wealth of knowledge. It is a series of studies originally written for harsichord, but adapted here for piano. The music is marked by beauty of melody, and ease in harmony, which was a characteristic of all of Dr. Arne's music and the reason for his continued popularity.
